All Systems A GO in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…. Launch!!!

Hi there, remember us? Β You may have noticed we took a little break during August. But happy to report we are back and gearing up for a big week. Labor Day is Monday and it’s moving day. Technically we don’t have to be out of our current location until Tuesday but we rearranged our plans some so Monday is our official launch day!

So here’s the low down, we have been in the same spot since we bought our RV in June. This week we tested all the slides to make sure they all still work and have adequate clearance. We still don’t know how much all the stuff we’ve filled this rig with weighs so that will be our first stop after we pull out, truck stop weigh station. Our next leg of the adventure is in Charleston, about a 5 hr drive from us if we were in a car doing 75. Taking into consideration we need to hit the truck stop to weigh it first and that we don’t know what we’re doing we are thinking this leg of the trip will take double the time.

OK, with the prospect of our travel day being 10 hrs long we decided to split up the journey. Our parents house is about 2 hrs from us and we figured we could hit the truck stop then head to their house. This would make for an easy short inaugural first trip. Β We can get a look inside of it and see what needs to be secured more, practice backing up with our new back-up camera and all that fun stuff. From this location it would normally be a 4 hr trip but again sense we gots no clue about pulling RVs and all these kinda things it will be closer to 6-7, which is better then the original 10 hr tour.

We have purchased all the wants/needs we think we have to have for this next leg of the trip. The last few items were things like bike racks, cargo racks, ladder racks and chains/locks to secure them all. We washed the rig sense it sat under a large tree all Summer in a rainforest like climate, it was pretty knarley up on the roof. Tanks have been cleaned, purging of final items have been made and I’m sure there is much more purging in our future.

I feel like we are NASA conducting a systems check before we launch.

Next weeks post is gonna be a big one so make sure you check back in for our big launch update. Subscribe if you haven’t already to make sure you don’t miss anything. I do post almost daily in our Facebook page so please “like” us if you haven’t and stay up to date with our TRAIL!

Home Sweet Home

We picked up our RV and had a family member help us haul it up to the RV park we will be staying at for at least another month in North Georgia. Everything went pretty seamless. Β My husband bought a power cord for the rig to connect us and get us energy. When he went to plug it in he had the wrong size. Luckily when he looked in the under storage he saw that the RV came with its own. It was on our listing of things to buy to prep for our new RV so not sure why it was in there unless it was their mistake. Either way I’m happy it was resolved quickly.Β

Oh and on my second trip up to the RV I realized I did not have the key to open the RV, just one of the exterior storage. That was a major bummer, hubs had to drive up during Friday night rush hour holiday weekend traffic to deliver it to us, we love him for that!! Β We now have 3 extra sets:)

Here are a few pics of the state of our house. Most rooms are night and day, either cleared out or a hot mess. I shot this video in one of my clean rooms cause it’s my happy place at the moment.Β

I filmed a rough video with my phone I can share now but plan to unload the official GoPro one soon. Sorry it cuts out before I get to the master bedroom. All my talk of storage in the RV and the storage on my phone ran low and cut off:(((

We Bought an RV

I always think of that movie with Matt Damon, We Bought a Zoo when I hear myself say We Bought an RV!  We love that movie and it’s kinda the same premise, we are looking for a new family adventure.  All the monies have been exchanged, 2 hour tour has been taken, insurance and warranty have been got! Unfortunately it did not come home with us, cause we ain’t got no truck to pull it with or a place to store it, so at the RV dealership it sits!

The tour and the closing paperwork took about 3 and half hours.  The 2 hour tour literally took 2 hours.  I’m guessing if you have owned an RV before it will go a bit faster but for us newbs we needed to know all its ins and outs.  I video taped it so a walk through will for sure be in our future to share with you all.  The paperwork is not as bad but pretty similar to closing on a house.  I’ve never bought a new car before so I cant compare but it may be close to that experience.  While we were there we opted to also get covers for the ceiling vents installed.  Makes sense you would want to be able to use these regardless if it was raining outside and not have to worry about getting rained on.  But also something you would think should just be a standard feature!

Now that we got that one large piece of the puzzle figured out, we really do need to get on the truck and towing it to where logistics figured out. We have put to rest the hunt for the RV and are now actively looking for the truck.  The thing about these 2 purchases is they need to be made while my husband still has a job and we still own our house.  2 key pieces of collateral banks look at when loaning out large chunks of cash.   We just actually secured a site for the next month at our families RV park in North GA.  We figured while waiting for the house to close we can slowly move all the stuff in and get to know our rig, I mean new home a bit better before hitting the open road.

I’m now in a mad dash to get the remaining of our stuff sold or donated so we can get this house officially empty.  Thinking about all the things that will be coming with us I still know we are bringing too much.  My biz supplies will take up a good chunk of storage but besides that all the homeschool/craft/toys are just overwhelming and we already purged so much.  Well the nice thing is having the time to make it all work, I think!

Good golly what a week, my head is spinning and I hurt my back.  We bought an RV, well almost!  We made a decision on what we wanted and went back to the dealer where we first toured it, a few over the Internet exchanges with price and in person back and forth and add-on whatnot’s. So with that said we put down a refundable deposit to hold it while we get approved for financing. If all goes as expected we will go sign all the paperwork and do the 2 hr tour next week.

It feels so good to have this decision made and about wrapped up. We’ve been so wishy-washy about which rig would be best for our needs. What I fist thought were must haves turned into I could probably live with-outs. But we won’t really know until we are fully in it if we got the right one, pretty sure we did!

So what were our original must haves?

  • 2 bathrooms
  • 2nd exterior door
  • Washer/drier hook-up
  • Slide in master for bed
  • 2 ac units
  • Bath tub
  • Kids have separate bedroom
  • Larger basement storage
  • Outdoor kitchen

What did we end up with?

  • 1 bathroom
  • 1 exterior door
  • Washer/drier all in 1 vented unit
  • Slide in master for bed
  • 2 ac units
  • Shower no tub
  • Mid bunk w/loft
  • Larger basement storage
  • No outdoor kitchen but a possibility of one due to additional storage space.

What, where and why were there compromises?  No rig fit our exact needs, no matter how much we would pay. I originally wanted 2 exterior doors and baths because I liked the set-up where the half bath where the 2nd door would enter into would double as a mudroom. Not having to track all the outside in while going in to potty sounded nice and clean. We fell in love with the midbunk model which didn’t provide these 2nd options in any company that offered this set up. My level of anxiety is yet to be determined with the level of dirt that will get tracked in on the daily.

We could not find a tub option for any of the midbunk models either. Midbunks are already longer than a lot of RVs out there so putting in a tub means taking away storage. But I may need to weigh this option down the road. I’m a bath taker and my back appreciates these soaks so we shall see, maybe a horse trough will do:) We also compromised on the outdoor kitchen. There are some really nice set-ups but they are more typical in a back bunkhouse model. Our midbunk has an extra exterior storage space that just may be able to pull off the kitchen we were hoping for.

What did we get that we are excited about?  The midbunk is great cause it gives you the 2nd bedroom but also gives you more shared living space. The back of the rig is all living room and kitchen with so much storage, kitchen island, fireplace, pantry, large residential fridge, we are pretty excited about all of it. It also has a bonus room which is called the loft. It’s above the bunkhouse and can double as another sleeping area for our kids, guests or as a playroom and storage. We got a rig that is pre-wired for solar so that will be another possibility to explore if we really start boondocking as much as we think we will. The RV is insulated for all 4 seasons which was also pretty high on our wants list. Most are only 3 season so doing Wintery snow excursions would be chilly, but not for us!

We still have lots of logistics to figure out like where is it going, how will it get there, insurance, when do we start moving our stuff in. But for now it feels good to have this main big decision over with!

Oh ya it was also my 40th birthday this week!  Lots of great surprises, parties and events were celebrated. But best of all was I got an RV for my birthday, that’s just crazy and awesome!!

Man I’m finding it hard to keep up with this blog. I’m so deep in the thick mucky quicksand of this house selling I can’t think strait. My hubs is off this upcoming week and I’m hoping we can knock a bunch of stuff off our to do lists so I can finally feel like I can breathe. I keep wishing I could fast forward 3 months. Just to get past this selling and buying and launching transition. But by doing that I’m missing the grunt work and what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right?

We still haven’tΒ decided how to list the house and our imaginary listing date is 2 weeks away. If it isn’t clear cut then maybe the imaginary line needs to be reassessed? Β I just want to get it listed and go from there. It’s kinda like this blog, as I type I know no one will be reading it as soon as I’m done writing it. The website is not public yet so all of these posts have never been seen by anyone but me. I’m too crazy to launch the site cause I want my vision of its potential to be perfect.

Sooo the whole perfect thing leads me to the hope that once we are free, free of all our stuff and the responsibility that goes along with them that I will be able to breathe. Stop being so caught up in my own head and just breathe.
